The horse’s movement is healthy when it’s balanced and supple —
so the energy of the hind legs can flow through the entire body
without being interrupted by blockages, energy leaks, or friction.
Correct is healthy.
A well-muscled topline appears round and smooth, accentuating the best of a horse’s natural conformation.
It’s not just pretty — it’s proof that the horse is using himself correctly.
Hollow backs. Tight shoulders. Dropped bellies. Stiff necks.
Over time, these patterns can lead to kissing spine, arthritis, tendon strain, and early breakdown.
If your horse is struggling to carry himself well without a rider,
adding your weight won’t help — it’ll just make the problem harder to see and fix.
With no rider to compensate for, your horse can find his own balance, build the correct musculature, and learn how to carry himself before carrying you.
The moment you add weight, gravity pulls the horse’s back down toward the ground. This makes it harder for him to learn to lift, stabilize, and coordinate.
Start here. Build the foundation first.
Not all groundwork is created equal. When done wrong, it can cause tension, crookedness, even confusion.
That’s why this course teaches biomechanically-correct groundwork — step by step...
so your horse builds strength, balance, and connection the right way.
So he knows where his feet are, how to move efficiently, and how to stay balanced in motion.
Both lateral and longitudinal — without the weight of the rider disrupting it.
Helping his body parts communicate clearly, so every step flows with purpose.
Because without a rider’s weight pressing down, he can activate and strengthen the right muscles.
Watch how the parts move together (or don’t) — and learn how to correct what’s off.
Groundwork lets you explain, refine, and reinforce — in a way that makes sense to the horse.
When you work on the ground, you build communication, trust, and connection. Groundwork gives you a shared language.
It strengthens trust. Builds understanding. And yes — the bond becomes closer when you do groundwork.
We’re Thomas and Shana Ritter, and together we’ve spent decades helping riders all over the world create more balanced, beautiful, and biomechanically sound movement — through classical, compassionate training that puts the horse’s well-being first.
That riding is an art… and good movement is medicine.
That how you train matters more than how fast you progress.
And that every horse deserves to feel good in his body — whether he’s a backyard companion or a high-level athlete.
In 2018, we began collaborating with Catherine McCrum, a Feldenkrais Practitioner based in London, to bring the powerful concepts of Feldenkrais into our rider education — and the results have been extraordinary.
Over time, it became clear: If these principles help riders move with more ease, balance, and awareness… why not apply them to the horses, too?
Catherine developed a series of FeldenHorse exercises —
gentle, hands-on techniques that translate Feldenkrais principles into practical groundwork.
The result? A more responsive, aware, and physically organized horse — from the inside out.
In the spring of 2020, we started working with a new group of horses —
many of whom had something in common:
poor topline development.
Sunken backs. Bulging undernecks.
Tight, compensating muscles. Weak, disconnected movement.
To help them, we created a topline rehabilitation protocol —
using Longing, Double-Longing, Work-in-Hand, and Long Reining —
and began integrating Catherine’s FeldenHorse techniques into the process.
These horses didn’t just look better — they moved better, felt better, and became more willing partners.
Thomas has written two published books on biomechanics-based training:
Dressage Principles Based on Biomechanics (Cadmos, 2010)
Long Reining: From the Beginning through the Levade (Cadmos, 2014)
His specialty has always been the work on the ground —
especially long reining, where balance, self-carriage, and body awareness can be cultivated without the interference of the rider’s weight.
In 2020, we decided to share this work in a fully online format for the first time —
combining biomechanics, classical theory, and groundwork into a structured system that anyone can follow.
- Horses whose toplines need some TLC
- Rehab cases who need to rebuild slowly and carefully
- Horses returning from time off
- Young horses prepping for under-saddle work
- Horses showing early signs of topline breakdown
- Re-training projects or horses with a complicated past
- Career-change horses adjusting to new movement demands
- Riders who can’t ride right now — due to injury, saddle fit, weather, or life
- Older horses who need help staying strong and sound
- You’re only looking for under-saddle solutions
- You’re unwilling to try groundwork
- You want quick fixes without understanding the why
- You believe riding alone will solve topline problems
- You’re not open to learning new techniques or perspectives
We’re so proud to help riders create visible, lasting changes in their horses —
not just in how they move, but in how they feel.
Here’s what happened when one of our course members applied this work to her own horse:
Before ➝ After: Wiggie’s Top and Bottom Lines Transformed
Understand what tools to use (and when) — including cavessons, longe lines, double-longe lines, and more — so your horse can move freely and correctly.
Use this essential groundwork technique to help your horse engage his back and build a healthier topline from day one — no gadgets needed.
Apply the Portuguese method of in-hand work to improve your horse’s responsiveness, balance, and coordination — with clarity and feel.
Understand what’s really happening in the body when the topline builds — and how to spot (and correct) the movement patterns that affect it.
Create a calm, focused learning space so your horse feels safe, curious, and ready to try — even if he’s anxious or green.
Set it up properly, hold the reins with purpose, and choose the right configurations to support your horse’s posture, straightness, and strength.
Learn how to spot physical changes — from sweat patterns to muscle tone — so you know exactly what’s working and what to adjust.
Infuse creativity and variety into your horse’s gymnastic work while targeting specific muscle groups — all from the ground.
Move seamlessly between groundwork methods — longeing, double-longeing, in-hand, and long reining — based on your horse’s needs.
Use FeldenHorse lessons to help your horse soften tension, shift weight more evenly, and build postural stability from the inside out.
Is it...
Not knowing what the topline really tells you about your horse’s health?
Realizing too late that poor movement patterns are causing resistance, tension, or even future unsoundness?
Feeling unsure how to correct those patterns — or even what to look for?
Are you missing the skills, the know-how, or the confidence to use it effectively?
Do you wish someone would just show you what to do — and when — so you don’t feel lost or stuck?
🥴 Guessing what your horse needs
➝ to confidently knowing how to help him move and feel better.
😓 Struggling with topline issues under saddle
➝ to solving them at the root — without needing to ride.
🤯 Feeling overwhelmed by conflicting advice
➝ to having a clear, step-by-step system that works.
😞 Seeing a horse who’s tense, hollow, or disconnected
➝ to seeing a horse who’s relaxed, strong, and proud of how he moves.
🙈 Not knowing what to look for
➝ to seeing what’s missing — and how to fix it.
"The best part for me in the Topline Makeover Course was putting it all together and patiently explaining to us how to identify issues, select the right exercises from the ground to help, and then gauge if you were making progress. Something about having the whole picture-- the conformation, the muscles, the skeletal structure, the biomechanics... the movement patterns, the habits, and the consideration for current or past injuries--helped me actually learn a way to look at a topline and think what the horse was doing or not doing to maintain THAT shape, imagine a more effective shape for the horse I have, and then do something about it. I felt like there was something for everyone, no matter your skill level or the conformation (or age) of your horse. Bonus were the horse videos, the patience, the empathy, the positive focus on making improvements, the encouragement that was always realistic and never false and the wonderful Ritter community who were along for the brisk walk down the long side for collected trot in hand."
- Jennifer Morris

Dr. Thomas Ritter is an international clinician and author of two books on classical dressage. Shana Ritter is a USDF Bronze and Silver Medalist. Together, they’ve guided thousands of students through the Artistic Dressage method. They co-teach this program with support from 7 expert assistant instructors.
Based in the UK, Catherine is an accredited Feldenkrais practitioner and Gestalt psychotherapist. She has been teaching sport, fitness, and movement since 1986, beginning as a ski instructor and personal trainer. With a special focus on how emotional and psychological patterns are held in the body, she helps riders improve awareness, coordination, balance, and suppleness through Feldenkrais-based lessons in the Artistic Dressage Program.
Catherine is also the creator of FeldenHorse — a unique bodywork approach that brings the principles of Feldenkrais into hands-on work with horses. These gentle, awareness-based techniques help improve the horse’s posture, movement, and willingness to engage, and have become a student favorite.
Based in Sweden, Charlotte is an accredited Feldenkrais practitioner, riding instructor, certified mindfulness teacher and author of Feldenkrais for Riders — a book now published in Swedish, German, and English. With a deep background in hypnotherapy, reflex integration, and movement education, Charlotte brings a uniquely holistic lens to equestrian work.
Yvonne, a Holistic Equine Therapist since 2002, specializes in various modalities such as acupuncture, homeopathy, Bach Flower remedies, cranio-sacral therapy, animal communication, and EMMETT. With a focus on biomechanics, she teaches within the Artistic Dressage online courses since 2018 and is known for her expertise in Work-in-Hand and Liberty work.
Marcella Becker, a dressage instructor based in Germany, benefited from several years of study under Thomas and Shana, gaining deep insight into their approach to educating horses and riders. With a keen eye for rider seat and horse movement honed over time, she offers valuable input on improving seat, horse movement, and rider-horse interaction.
Kristen Guest is an amateur rider residing in a remote area of Canada. Since she followed Thomas home from a clinic in 2009, she has been his student, developing her horse from backing to showing FEI tests under his supervision. Currently focusing on schooling the movements for Grand Prix, Kristen plans to debut her self-trained Lipizzaner at Grand Prix in 2024.
Caroline Duff-Riddell, a resident of South Africa, has experienced various equestrian disciplines including jumping, racing, and eventing before transitioning to Dressage due to unsoundness. She began with Artistic Dressage in the very first online course and has become an invaluable source of wisdom and guidance for the course members. She shares her life with two cherished mares, DarlingDay and Lily.
Dr. Fiona Mead, BVSc, CVA (IVAS), PCDipABM, is an equine veterinarian and certified animal bodyworker based in New Zealand. A passionate advocate for holistic equine health, she blends biomechanics, hoof care, herbal medicine, and energetic modalities. She has trained extensively in equine bodywork and saddle fitting and brings a unique, heart-centered approach to rider-horse harmony.
You want to lay a solid, sustainable foundation — not just push him up the levels.
You know there’s no such thing as “perfect,” but you want your horse to be happy, sound, and confident in his body.
You've been craving gymnastic, classically-inspired groundwork that actually develops the horse — not just drills him.
You don’t need to be experienced — just willing to learn, experiment, and take the first step. We’ll guide you through the rest.
Still thinking it through? Let’s get your questions answered
Yes — if you’re open-minded, curious, and willing to try new things (even if they feel awkward at first), you’ll fit right in. This course is designed for riders of any discipline and any experience level — even if you’ve never done groundwork before.
It’s also incredibly versatile for horses. Whether your horse is older, younger (but over four), coming back from time off, rehabbing, or just needing a fresh start — the Topline Makeover can help. Even fit, competition-ready horses benefit from the increased balance, strength, and body awareness this course brings.
Worried your horse “doesn’t longe”? No problem. We offer alternatives to traditional longeing, and you can skip those sections entirely if needed. The same goes for vet-restricted cases — check with your vet, and if it’s a no-go, just focus on the rest. There’s plenty here for both of you.
And yes — if you take weekly lessons or follow other programs, this will still fit beautifully. Many students use it alongside regular training, and even share course materials with their instructors for added support.
You’re busy — we get it. This course is designed to fit into real life, not take it over. Each module takes about 1–2 hours per week to go through. Then, you can spend as much or as little time as you like applying what you’ve learned with your horse.
As for results? Some students see changes in posture and movement within just a few sessions. Deeper changes in musculature take more time — but they will come with consistent, thoughtful work. That’s why we encourage you to take “before” photos of your horse at the start… so you can track the transformation for yourself.
You’ll need a horse (naturally!) and a relatively flat area to work in, like an arena or paddock. Inside the course, we provide a complete recommended gear list — but here’s the short version:
Cavesson
2 longe lines
Bridle + reins
Circingle
Longe whip and a shorter whip for work-in-hand or riding
It’s also helpful to have a way to record video — a smartphone, tripod, or robotic camera — so you can track your horse’s progress.
To access the course, you’ll need a device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) with internet access. Zoom (free to download) is used for optional live sessions, and there’s an optional Facebook group for extra connection and support.
No worries — this course is completely self-paced and designed to work around your life and your horse’s needs. You get lifetime access to all materials, so you can take it slow, come back to it anytime, or restart from wherever you left off.
Everything is available immediately, and it’s all fully downloadable — videos, audios, PDFs, checklists, diagrams — so you can save it to your device and even work offline if needed. This is your program, on your terms.
That’s totally okay — and in many ways, this course is designed especially for riders without access to in-person instruction. You’ll get clear guidance, step-by-step exercises, and plenty of support along the way.
And if you want feedback or connection, the optional Facebook community is a great place to ask questions, share progress, and get encouragement from fellow students and the Ritter team.
This isn’t just another collection of exercises — it’s a full system. The Topline Makeover is the only course we offer that’s entirely focused on groundwork, and it’s the only one that integrates our FeldenHorse bodywork approach alongside gymnastic, biomechanically-aligned training.
Even if you’ve done groundwork before, you haven’t done this. Our method is unique — built on a clear framework, practical progression, and decades of experience that you won’t find anywhere else.
Absolutely. These are the same methods we’ve used ourselves to rehab several horses here in Portugal — and we’ve seen the results firsthand. Many of our students around the world have used this approach to bring their horses to a whole new level, even up to FEI, using only our online courses and video coaching. Your horse’s topline is not just a vanity metric. It reveals meaningful, detailed information about the quality of the work you're doing — and more importantly, how your horse uses his body. Is he moving in a way that builds strength and balance? Or in a way that creates tension and resistance?
When you address the topline using our Topline Development Method, you’re not just chasing symptoms — you’re transforming the root cause. We teach you the what, the why, and the how.
You're going to learn the deeper work that teaches the horse to use his body better — so he can be sounder, healthier, and happier for the long haul.
The beautiful topline your horse develops is just the side effect of doing the right work.
We know you might not have the skills, the biomechanics background, the support, or the confidence to do this on your own.
That’s exactly why we built this course. For YOU.
To help you help your horse — and to give you the tools, structure, and support to confidently take action.
So if you’re ready to stop guessing… and …get started on the most transformative, impactful work you’ll ever do with your horse...
