Build Your Horse’s Topline — From the Ground Up

This proven groundwork program helps you rebuild your horse from the ground up
— correctly, confidently, and with compassion.

If your horse’s back is hollow, weak, or underdeveloped — no matter how much you ride — it’s time to fix the problem at its root.

The Topline Makeover is a step-by-step system that shows you exactly how to develop your horse’s strength, symmetry, and soundness from the ground, so he’s not just ready to carry a rider — he’s comfortable, confident, and wants to work with you.
-> ENROLL NOW. Proceed to Step 2.

You can tell the truth about a horse’s training just by looking at his body.

(Especially his topline).

Is he developing in a way that supports longevity — or is he breaking down before your eyes?

When a horse is:
» Using himself correctly
» Moving in healthy balance, not imbalance
» Building strength instead of bracing or compensating
» Relaxed, engaged, and proud of how he moves...
…you’ll SEE it in his musculature.

The Truth is in the Musculature.

A horse’s musculature tells the story of his training.

Is he moving in a healthy balance — or compensating through tension?

Are his muscles supporting soundness — or hiding strain?

Is his training helping him become stronger — or just getting him through the motions?

Correct training makes the horse more beautiful over time.

“Xenophon was the first one to claim that horses can become only more beautiful with correct training, never uglier. I would like to add to this that if the horse becomes uglier in the course of his work, it is the unmistakable proof of incorrect dressage training.” -  Alois Podhajsky (1965, translation: TR).

Good Movement = Healthy Movement

And healthy movement creates a good topline.

Good Movement

The horse’s movement is healthy when it’s balanced and supple —
so the energy of the hind legs can flow through the entire body
without being interrupted by blockages, energy leaks, or friction.
Correct is healthy.

The Topline Tells the Truth

A well-muscled topline appears round and smooth, accentuating the best of a horse’s natural conformation.
It’s not just pretty — it’s proof that the horse is using himself correctly.

But poor movement leaves signs too:

Hollow backs. Tight shoulders. Dropped bellies. Stiff necks.
Over time, these patterns can lead to kissing spine, arthritis, tendon strain, and early breakdown.

The muscling shows you everything — whether your training is building the horse up… or wearing him down.

The first place to begin is on the ground.

If your horse is struggling to carry himself well without a rider,
adding your weight won’t help — it’ll just make the problem harder to see and fix.

» Groundwork removes the guesswork.

With no rider to compensate for, your horse can find his own balance, build the correct musculature, and learn how to carry himself before carrying you.

» Gravity is real.

The moment you add weight, gravity pulls the horse’s back down toward the ground. This makes it harder for him to learn to lift, stabilize, and coordinate.

On the ground, he can focus on his own body — without the extra challenge of balancing yours.

Start here. Build the foundation first.

Then when you do ride...
your horse is stronger, straighter, and more able to carry you with confidence.

With the right groundwork you can:

Not all groundwork is created equal. When done wrong, it can cause tension, crookedness, even confusion.
That’s why this course teaches biomechanically-correct groundwork — step by step...
so your horse builds strength, balance, and connection the right way.

Improve your horse’s body awareness

So he knows where his feet are, how to move efficiently, and how to stay balanced in motion.

Improve his balance

Both lateral and longitudinal — without the weight of the rider disrupting it.

Improve his coordination

Helping his body parts communicate clearly, so every step flows with purpose.

Build the back muscles more easily

Because without a rider’s weight pressing down, he can activate and strengthen the right muscles.

See how he uses his whole body

Watch how the parts move together (or don’t) — and learn how to correct what’s off.

Introduce and explain new movement patterns more clearly

Groundwork lets you explain, refine, and reinforce — in a way that makes sense to the horse.

Deepen your connection.

When you work on the ground, you build communication, trust, and connection.  Groundwork gives you a shared language.
It strengthens trust. Builds understanding. And yes — the bond becomes closer when you do groundwork.

These aren’t just “nice ideas” — they’re the natural outcome of our proven groundwork system.
Because when done right, groundwork doesn’t just prepare your horse for riding — it transforms him.

Wait… before we go any further, let us introduce ourselves.

We’re Thomas and Shana Ritter, and together we’ve spent decades helping riders all over the world create more balanced, beautiful, and biomechanically sound movement — through classical, compassionate training that puts the horse’s well-being first.

We believe:

That riding is an art… and good movement is medicine.

That how you train matters more than how fast you progress.

And that every horse deserves to feel good in his body — whether he’s a backyard companion or a high-level athlete.

The Topline Makeover was created out of everything we wish someone had given us when we were trying to truly understand how to help a horse lift his back, move well, and thrive in training.

Meet Our Co-Teacher: Catherine McCrum

In 2018, we began collaborating with Catherine McCrum, a Feldenkrais Practitioner based in London, to bring the powerful concepts of Feldenkrais into our rider education — and the results have been extraordinary.

Over time, it became clear: If these principles help riders move with more ease, balance, and awareness… why not apply them to the horses, too?

Catherine developed a series of FeldenHorse exercises
gentle, hands-on techniques that translate Feldenkrais principles into practical groundwork.

The result? A more responsive, aware, and physically organized horse — from the inside out.

Where This Program Comes From...

In the spring of 2020, we started working with a new group of horses —
many of whom had something in common:
poor topline development.

Sunken backs. Bulging undernecks.
Tight, compensating muscles. Weak, disconnected movement.

To help them, we created a topline rehabilitation protocol
using Longing, Double-Longing, Work-in-Hand, and Long Reining
and began integrating Catherine’s FeldenHorse techniques into the process.

The results?
Extraordinary.

These horses didn’t just look better — they moved better, felt better, and became more willing partners.

About Thomas Ritter

Thomas has written two published books on biomechanics-based training:

  • Dressage Principles Based on Biomechanics (Cadmos, 2010)

  • Long Reining: From the Beginning through the Levade (Cadmos, 2014)

His specialty has always been the work on the ground —
especially long reining, where balance, self-carriage, and body awareness can be cultivated without the interference of the rider’s weight.

In 2020, we decided to share this work in a fully online format for the first time —
combining biomechanics, classical theory, and groundwork into a structured system that anyone can follow.

Whether your horse is older, younger, coming back from an injury, or just needs some extra TLC…
these simple, effective exercises help develop the topline from the ground up.

✦ The Topline Makeover Course ✦

A practical, results-focused program to sculpt, rebuild, and repair your horse’s topline -
entirely from the ground.

Using longeing, double-longeing, work-in-hand, and long reining, you’ll learn how to develop healthy movement patterns that systematically improve your horse’s movement, balance, and strength.

You’ll also be introduced to FeldenHorse, a gentle bodywork approach based on Feldenkrais principles, designed to help your horse release tension, move with more awareness, and feel better in his body.

This course is perfect for:

- Horses whose toplines need some TLC

- Rehab cases who need to rebuild slowly and carefully

- Horses returning from time off

- Young horses prepping for under-saddle work

- Horses showing early signs of topline breakdown

- Re-training projects or horses with a complicated past

- Career-change horses adjusting to new movement demands

- Riders who can’t ride right now — due to injury, saddle fit, weather, or life

- Older horses who need help staying strong and sound

🚫 This course is not for you if:

- You’re only looking for under-saddle solutions

- You’re unwilling to try groundwork

- You want quick fixes without understanding the why

- You believe riding alone will solve topline problems

- You’re not open to learning new techniques or perspectives

If you’re ready to build a better connection — and a stronger back — from the ground up, you’re in the right place.

I'm ready to learn! Sign me up!

We’re so proud to help riders create visible, lasting changes in their horses —
not just in how they move, but in how they feel.

Here’s what happened when one of our course members applied this work to her own horse:

Before ➝ After: Wiggie’s Top and Bottom Lines Transformed

By the end of this program, you’ll learn:

CHOOSE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT

Understand what tools to use (and when) — including cavessons, longe lines, double-longe lines, and more — so your horse can move freely and correctly.

LONGE WITH A CAVESSON

Use this essential groundwork technique to help your horse engage his back and build a healthier topline from day one — no gadgets needed.

USE WORK-IN-HAND

Apply the Portuguese method of in-hand work to improve your horse’s responsiveness, balance, and coordination — with clarity and feel.

APPLY TOPLINE DEVELOPMENT THEORY

Understand what’s really happening in the body when the topline builds — and how to spot (and correct) the movement patterns that affect it.

SET THE RIGHT TONE AND MINDSET

Create a calm, focused learning space so your horse feels safe, curious, and ready to try — even if he’s anxious or green.

USE DOUBLE-LONGEING WITH PRECISION

Set it up properly, hold the reins with purpose, and choose the right configurations to support your horse’s posture, straightness, and strength.

ASSESS YOUR HORSE'S PROGRESS

Learn how to spot physical changes — from sweat patterns to muscle tone — so you know exactly what’s working and what to adjust.

USE LONG REINING WITH PURPOSE

Infuse creativity and variety into your horse’s gymnastic work while targeting specific muscle groups — all from the ground.

COMBINE TECHNIQUES FOR MAXIMUM EFFECT

Move seamlessly between groundwork methods — longeing, double-longeing, in-hand, and long reining — based on your horse’s needs.

APPLY FELDENKRAIS FOR HORSES

Use FeldenHorse lessons to help your horse soften tension, shift weight more evenly, and build postural stability from the inside out.

This isn’t just theory — it’s everything you need to rebuild your horse’s body, step by step.

What’s been holding you back?

Is it...

Not knowing what the topline really tells you about your horse’s health?

Realizing too late that poor movement patterns are causing resistance, tension, or even future unsoundness?

Feeling unsure how to correct those patterns — or even what to look for?

And when it comes to groundwork…

Are you missing the skills, the know-how, or the confidence to use it effectively?

Do you wish someone would just show you what to do — and when — so you don’t feel lost or stuck?

This is EXACTLY what this course is designed to help you with.

🔄 You’ll Go From…

🥴 Guessing what your horse needs
➝ to confidently knowing how to help him move and feel better.

😓 Struggling with topline issues under saddle
➝ to solving them at the root — without needing to ride.

🤯 Feeling overwhelmed by conflicting advice
➝ to having a clear, step-by-step system that works.

😞 Seeing a horse who’s tense, hollow, or disconnected
➝ to seeing a horse who’s relaxed, strong, and proud of how he moves.

🙈 Not knowing what to look for
➝ to seeing what’s missing — and how to fix it.

There's something for everyone!

"The best part for me in the Topline Makeover Course was putting it all together and patiently explaining to us how to identify issues, select the right exercises from the ground to help, and then gauge if you were making progress. Something about having the whole picture-- the conformation, the muscles, the skeletal structure, the biomechanics... the movement patterns, the habits, and the consideration for current or past injuries--helped me actually learn a way to look at a topline and think what the horse was doing or not doing to maintain THAT shape, imagine a more effective shape for the horse I have, and then do something about it. I felt like there was something for everyone, no matter your skill level or the conformation (or age) of your horse. Bonus were the horse videos, the patience, the empathy, the positive focus on making improvements, the encouragement that was always realistic and never false and the wonderful Ritter community who were along for the brisk walk down the long side for collected trot in hand."
- Jennifer Morris

🛠️ The Tools You Actually Need to Transform Your Horse’s Topline

Most riders aren’t taught to read the horse’s body like a map —
and that’s exactly what’s missing.

This isn’t just groundwork for groundwork’s sake.
The Topline Makeover teaches you how to see your horse’s body with new eyes —
spotting imbalance, tension, and compensation patterns —
and then knowing exactly what to do to fix them.

You’ll get the tools to:

Assess your horse’s posture, movement, and muscle development

Pinpoint what’s helping (or harming) his topline

✸  Apply step-by-step groundwork strategies to build balance, strength, and suppleness — from the inside out

 This isn’t about random exercises.

It’s a repeatable method that gives you a clear path to real, measurable progress — FROM DAY ONE.

💡 And while your horse’s posture and movement will change...

The real magic?

Your relationship deepens.
The clarity, the confidence, the connection — it all grows stronger.

Still not sure if it works?
We’ll let the horses (and their humans) show you…

Let’s get clear. The Topline Makeover Course isn’t for everyone.
But if any of these sound like YOU… you're in the right place:

Your care about your horse's well-being...

You want to lay a solid, sustainable foundation — not just push him up the levels.

You're ready to help your horse be his best

You know there’s no such thing as “perfect,” but you want your horse to be happy, sound, and confident in his body.

You are keen to do more groundwork..

You've been craving gymnastic, classically-inspired groundwork that actually develops the horse — not just drills him.

You're motivated and excited to do the work...

You don’t need to be experienced — just willing to learn, experiment, and take the first step. We’ll guide you through the rest.

This is your chance to join the Topline Makeover.

Thousands of riders have transformed their horse’s posture, movement, and mindset using this system — and you can too.

You could keep trying to figure it out alone… or you can shortcut the guesswork with a proven plan that works — and a team to support you every step of the way.

If you’re ready to experience this for yourself… let’s get started.

We'll see you on the inside!

🔍 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Still thinking it through? Let’s get your questions answered

Yes — if you’re open-minded, curious, and willing to try new things (even if they feel awkward at first), you’ll fit right in. This course is designed for riders of any discipline and any experience level — even if you’ve never done groundwork before.

It’s also incredibly versatile for horses. Whether your horse is older, younger (but over four), coming back from time off, rehabbing, or just needing a fresh start — the Topline Makeover can help. Even fit, competition-ready horses benefit from the increased balance, strength, and body awareness this course brings.

Worried your horse “doesn’t longe”? No problem. We offer alternatives to traditional longeing, and you can skip those sections entirely if needed. The same goes for vet-restricted cases — check with your vet, and if it’s a no-go, just focus on the rest. There’s plenty here for both of you.

And yes — if you take weekly lessons or follow other programs, this will still fit beautifully. Many students use it alongside regular training, and even share course materials with their instructors for added support.

You’re busy — we get it. This course is designed to fit into real life, not take it over. Each module takes about 1–2 hours per week to go through. Then, you can spend as much or as little time as you like applying what you’ve learned with your horse.

As for results? Some students see changes in posture and movement within just a few sessions. Deeper changes in musculature take more time — but they will come with consistent, thoughtful work. That’s why we encourage you to take “before” photos of your horse at the start… so you can track the transformation for yourself.

You’ll need a horse (naturally!) and a relatively flat area to work in, like an arena or paddock. Inside the course, we provide a complete recommended gear list — but here’s the short version:

  • Cavesson

  • 2 longe lines

  • Bridle + reins

  • Circingle

  • Longe whip and a shorter whip for work-in-hand or riding

It’s also helpful to have a way to record video — a smartphone, tripod, or robotic camera — so you can track your horse’s progress.
To access the course, you’ll need a device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) with internet access. Zoom (free to download) is used for optional live sessions, and there’s an optional Facebook group for extra connection and support.

No worries — this course is completely self-paced and designed to work around your life and your horse’s needs. You get lifetime access to all materials, so you can take it slow, come back to it anytime, or restart from wherever you left off.

Everything is available immediately, and it’s all fully downloadable — videos, audios, PDFs, checklists, diagrams — so you can save it to your device and even work offline if needed. This is your program, on your terms.

That’s totally okay — and in many ways, this course is designed especially for riders without access to in-person instruction. You’ll get clear guidance, step-by-step exercises, and plenty of support along the way.

And if you want feedback or connection, the optional Facebook community is a great place to ask questions, share progress, and get encouragement from fellow students and the Ritter team.

This isn’t just another collection of exercises — it’s a full system. The Topline Makeover is the only course we offer that’s entirely focused on groundwork, and it’s the only one that integrates our FeldenHorse bodywork approach alongside gymnastic, biomechanically-aligned training.

Even if you’ve done groundwork before, you haven’t done this. Our method is unique — built on a clear framework, practical progression, and decades of experience that you won’t find anywhere else.

Absolutely. These are the same methods we’ve used ourselves to rehab several horses here in Portugal — and we’ve seen the results firsthand. Many of our students around the world have used this approach to bring their horses to a whole new level, even up to FEI, using only our online courses and video coaching. Yes! When you join, you’ll get access to our private Facebook group — a supportive, encouraging space where you can ask questions, share progress, and get help when you need it.

Whether you're troubleshooting something specific or just need a bit of motivation, you’ll find camaraderie, feedback, and direct access to the Ritter team and fellow students.

Absolutely. Our community includes riders of all breeds and backgrounds — from Icelandics to Thoroughbreds to gaited horses and more. The principles in this course apply to every horse, regardless of discipline or tradition.

Yes — family members in the same household can share the course. If they’d like access to the Facebook group too, just email us at [email protected] to get them approved.

You’re in the driver’s seat. You can follow the course at your own pace, with as much or as little involvement as you like. The Facebook Group is totally optional. The more you engage, the more you’ll likely get out of it — but it’s your journey, and we’re here to support it either way.

We hope it exceeds your expectations — but if it’s not the right fit, no worries. You have a full 14-day money-back guarantee. Try it out, explore the materials, and see if it’s right for you.

We can’t guarantee instant results — your progress depends on your consistency and willingness to learn. But what we can guarantee is a program full of powerful tools, clear guidance, and support to help you get there.

THIS IS IT — IT’S TIME!

Your horse’s topline is not just a vanity metric. It reveals meaningful, detailed information about the quality of the work you're doing — and more importantly, how your horse uses his body. Is he moving in a way that builds strength and balance? Or in a way that creates tension and resistance?

When you address the topline using our Topline Development Method, you’re not just chasing symptoms — you’re transforming the root cause. We teach you the what, the why, and the how.
You're going to learn the deeper work that teaches the horse to use his body better — so he can be sounder, healthier, and happier for the long haul.

The beautiful topline your horse develops is just the side effect of doing the right work.

We know you might not have the skills, the biomechanics background, the support, or the confidence to do this on your own.
That’s exactly why we built this course. For YOU.
To help you help your horse — and to give you the tools, structure, and support to confidently take action.

So if you’re ready to stop guessing… and …get started on the most transformative, impactful work you’ll ever do with your horse...
